Car won't start and engine fails to turn

If you try to start your engine and nothing happens and engine fails to turn, this could be a flat bettery.

Often Flat batteries occure due to lights been left on the vehicle left parked up, other wise battery is in a very poor state or bad connections to the battery. In this small guide we will help you determine what has happened

Before we start we must ensure the vehicle is secured, we dont wont to start our vehicle whilst in gear and end up crashing or causing damage to our vehicle do we

  • Ensure you vehicle is out of gear, or if automatic in park mode
  • Ensure the hand brake is firmly on, you wont want your car to sudenly roll down hill wilst you are outside of this do you

Now since the car is now secured from mishaps, we are now going to open the bonet, most car bonet release is situated on or near the steering colum, the bit that makes the car go in the direction you want

Once we have the bonet fully open, this then should be secured with the arm that holds this in place, make sure this is secure, it can hurt a great deal should the bonet fall on your head

Now to the nitty gritty - The battery should be located down the side of the engine compartment, once you locate this check the connection on the battery terminals(the two cables attached to the pins on the battery) are clean and tight. if these seem fine our next step is to switch on your headlights, normally with a flat battery our headlight will be dim and the battery just doesnt have the juice to start the engine. If this is the case we will definately need to jump start the vehicle using jump cables (see our guide).
